Morphology

A stiff bushy shrub up to 1 m tall, stems very leafy, the lower parts becoming leafless with age and spinescent from the persistent leaf bases. Leaves rigid, sessile, clasping, up to 9 cm long, decreasing slightly in size upwards, oblong in outline, pinnatifid, the rhachis linear, 2-4 mm broad, lobes up to 14 x 4 mm, distant, linear-lanceolate, spine-tipped, paired, the upper much shorter than the lower, margins entire, revolute, sometimes with a few slender spines, upper surface glabrous, lower white-felted. Heads 5-9 cm across the expanded rays, solitary or few together at the tips of the branches. Involucral bracts linear, up to 3 mm broad, otherwise much resembling the leaves. Rays white or white tinged mauve, disc mauve. Achenes 2-3 mm long, turbinate, glabrous. Pappus scales c. 1 mm long, more or less oblong.

    Frutex rigidus ramosus, fide collect, cr. 1 m altus. Rami in partibus iunioribus pilis glanduliferis minutis obtecti, glabrescentes, dense foliati internodiis 1-3 mm longis, in partibus vetustioribus cicatricibus subimbri-catis spinis tenuibus 1-5 mm longis ciliatis foliorum delapsorum obtecti. Folia alterna, sessilia, semi-amplexicaulia, rigida, coriacea, 4-9 cm longa supremis paulum minoribus, pinnatifida rhachide lineari 2-4 mm lata apice acuta in spinam fulvam 2-4 mm longam excurrente, laciniis utrinque cr. 5-7 oppositis vel suboppositis vel alternis 2-14 mm longis basin folii versus decrescentibus lineari-subulatis ut apex rhachidis in spinam excurrentibus saepe cum laciniis minoribus vel spinis solis geminatis, margine reyoluta, inermia, rarissime spinis paucis obsita, supra glabra, subtus nervo mediano excepto albidi-tomentosa. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria vel pauca ± conferta, radiata, ligulis expansis 5-9 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, rigidae, indumento foliis similes, lineares, (1.5-)2-3 mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores spinis in 3-6 iugis dispositis geminatis vel ternatis divaricatis 3-5 mm longis obsitae, sequentes sensim densius et brevius spinosi-ciliatae, mediae (15-)20-25 mm longae, ceterae paulum breviores. Ligulae florum radii fide collect. in vivo albae, flores disci violacei. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in dentes cr. 1 mm longos productae. Achaenia 2-3 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, lanceolatae vel oblongi-obovatae, subacutae vel obtusae, 1-1.3 mm longae, apicem versus denticulatae.

    Habitat

    In small colonies in gullies in grassland or in the boulder beds of streams.

    Distribution

    Known only from a restricted area of the Natal Drakensberg, from Tugela Gorge to Champagne Castle.
