Diagnostic Description

O. junceum is characterized by its large, obovoid- to broadly ellipsoid-trigonous achenes, which are furnished towards the apex with three quite short, more or less ridge-like, blunt processes. Between these apical processes there are one or more furrows. The base of the achenes is as a rule conspicuously furrowed. The involucre is very characteristic and unusually large as compared with that in other Osteospermum species, and the inner involucral scales may be up to 15 mm long and 6 mm broad. The involucral scales are imbricate, floccosely white-woolly or, in course of time, partly glabrous. The younger parts of the plant are covered with a more or less dense, light grey indument, which soon falls off.
