General Information

Trees, to 30 m tall but usually shorter when cultivated. Bark pale brown to gray, thinly scaly fissured. Twigs, vegetative buds, petioles, and leaf blade abaxial surfaces densely brown to grayish brown shortly tomentose but abaxial surface of young leaf blades glabrous. Twigs thick and strong. Petiole 1.5-4 cm, deeply furrowed, without a stipular scar; leaf blade elliptic, oblong-elliptic, or obovate-oblong, 10-20 × 4-7(-10) cm, thickly leathery, adaxially deep green and glossy, secondary veins 8-10 on each side of midvein, base cuneate, apex obtuse to shortly mucronate. Flowers 15-20 cm in diam., fragrant. Tepals 9-12, white, obovate, 6-10 × 5-7 cm, thickly fleshy. Stamens ca. 2 cm; filaments purple, flat; connective exserted and forming a mucro; anthers introrse. Gynoecium ellipsoid, densely long tomentose; carpels ovoid, 1-1.5 cm; styles reclinate. Fruit terete to ovoid, 7-10 × 4-5 cm, densely brown to pale grayish yellow tomentose; mature carpels abaxially rounded, dehiscing along dorsal sutures, apex long beaked. Seeds ovoid, ca. 1.4 × 0.6 cm; testa red. Fl. May-Jun, fr. Sep-Oct. 2n = 114.

    Trees , evergreen, single-trunked, to 37 m. Bark gray, rough, thick, furrowed in thick plates. Pith diaphragmed. Twigs and foliar buds densely red- or white-hairy. Leaves distinctly alternate, not in terminal whorl-like clusters; stipules 2, free, 4.5-13 × 1.5-3.5 cm, abaxially densely brown-silky, sometimes deeply notched. Leaf blade narrowly to broadly elliptic or oblanceolate, (7.5-)13-20(-26) × (4.5-)6-10(-12.5) cm, thick-leathery, base narrowly cuneate, apex abruptly tapered and acute to short-acuminate, rarely obtuse; surfaces abaxially glabrous to densely red-brown felted, adaxially bright green, lustrous, glabrous. Flowers strongly lemony fragrant, 15-30(-45) cm across; spathaceous bracts 2, leathery, outer bract abaxially brown to grayish pilose, deeply notched, smaller, inner bract adaxially densely brown to grayish pilose, shallowly notched, larger; tepals creamy white; stamens (179-)213-383(-405), 16-29 mm; filaments purple; pistils (45-)55-81(-89). Follicetums cylindric to somewhat obovoid, 7-10 × 3.5-5 cm; follicles beaked, sparsely to densely silky-villous. Seeds lenticular to narrowly ellipsoid, (9-)12-14 mm, adaxially slightly grooved, aril red. 2 n =114.

    Handsome tree to 30 m; winter terminal bud 1–2.5 cm, evidently hairy; lvs scattered or somewhat clustered toward the ends of the twigs, leathery, evergreen, elliptic, 12–25 cm, a third or half as wide, acute to obtuse, basally acute to rounded-obtuse, the lower surface conspicuously rusty with a ± persistent, thin, villous tomentum; fls fragrant, creamy-white, cup-shaped, ca 10 cm thick; pet 6–12, obovate or spatulate, broadly rounded distally, concave, 7–13 cm; fr cone ellipsoid, 6–10 cm, the follicles woolly- villous; 2n=ca 114. Rich woods and moist bottomlands; coastal plain from se. Va. to Fla. and Tex. Apr.–June.

    An evergreen tree, 14-30 m tall; branchlets hoary tomentose, tomentum dwindling with age. Leaves 12-25 cm long, 6-10 cm broad, elliptic-oblong, ovate to obovate, entire, bright green above, usually rusty tomentose beneath, rarely glabrous; apex acute, obtuse or acuminate; base cuneate; stipules forming a long conical sheath covering the bud. Flowers solitary, terminal, 15-25 cm in diameter, fragrant; pedicel stout, l.5-3 cm long; bracts rusty tomentose. Perianth 9-15, concave, the outer broader and longer, oval to ovate, 6-9 cm long, 3-5.5 cm broad, oblanceolate, acuminate. Stamens l.25-2 cm long; filaments bright purple; anthers adnate, yellow, introrse. Carpels l-2 ovuled; fruiting carpels ovate to obovate, 1.5-3 cm long, rusty brown tomen¬tose, dehiscing by dorsal suture. Seeds l-l.25 cm long, obovoid or triangular-obovoid, bright red.

    Árbol perennifolio o parcialmente caducifolio ocasionalmente hasta de 25 m; corteza castaña o grisácea. Ramas fuertes inicialmente cubiertas por pelos apretados de color leonado o amarillo y tardíamente glabrescentes, pardo oscuras. Yemas densamente sericeas con pelos de color leonado; catáfilos libres del pecíolo. Hojas pecioladas; peciolos robustos, 9-27 mm long., cubiertos de pelos leonados; pasando a glabros y sin cicatriz en la superficie adaxial del pecíolo; lámina foliar fuertemente coriácea, 8.0-20.0 cm long. x 6.0-9.0 cm lat., angosta o anchamente elípticas, base atenuada, ápice obtuso; haz verde oscuro lustroso, envés con indumento de pelos apretados o esparcidos de color amarillo o ferruginoso claro; 16-18 pares de nervios secundarios, promínulos por ambas caras. Flores grandes, fragantes, dispuestas sobre un pedúnculo, erecto, robusto; tépalos 9-12 (raro más), crasiúsculos, glabros, color blanco o crema, 7.5-12.0 cm long. x 4.0.9.0 cm lat., anchamente espatulados a obovados. Estambres numerosos 1.2-2.0 cm long., de color blanco, a veces con los filamentos purpurinos. Gineceo 2.5 cm long., carpelos ca. 65, con indumento seríceo de pelos leonados, estilo glabro. Plurifolículo ovóideo, 15.5-10.0 cm long., con indumento amarillo, estilos cortos recurvados, folículos basales decurrentes a lo largo del eje floral. Semillas 1.2 cm long., sarcotesta de color amarillo o roja.

      Herdem yeşil ağaçlar. Gövde tek, 25-30 m boylarında; gövde kabuğu kahverengimsi ilâ gri renkli. Yapraklar 8-17,3 × 2,2-8,4 cm, dar mızraksı ilâ geniş yumurtamsı, deri gibi sert, üstte koyu yeşil, tüysüz, parlak, altta kadife gibi kahverengi tüylerle kaplı veya tüysüz; orta damarı belirgin çıkıntılı, kahverengi tüylerle kaplı; kenarı fırfırlı, içeri doğru kıvrık; tabanı yamuk veya kamamsı; ucu sivri; yaprak sapı 9-27 mm uzunluğunda, kahverengi-sarı tüylü; yaprak tomurcuk pulları sarımsı pas renkli tüylü. Çiçek tomurcukları uç sürgünlerde; çiçek sapı ipeksi pas renkli tüylü, 1-1,5 cm uzunluğunda; çiçekler hafif kokulu; çanak yapraklar 3, sarımsı yeşil renkli, ipeksi pas renkli tüylü; taç yapraklar 8-12, ince, etli, fildişi beyaz renkli, geniş kaşıksı veya geniş yumurtamsı ilâ daire şeklinde, 7,5-14 × 4-10,6 cm; erkek organlar çok sayıda, 13-22 mm uzunlukta, sarı renkli, dipte pembemsi renkli; dişi organ 2-3,6 cm uzunlukta; karpeller yoğun ipeksi gümüşî tüylü; sitilus tüysüz. Meyve yumurta şeklinde 5,5-7,5 cm boyunda, sarı veya gümüşî bronz renkli; foliküller kısa ipeksi tüylü, yüksek gaga şeklinde; tabandaki foliküller çiçek ekseni boyunca kayıcı. Tohumlar 12 mm uzunluğunda, dışta kırmızı, iç kısım fildişi rengi.
