Hierbas 0.5–6 m de alto. Hojas angostamente elípticas a angostamente obovadas, 15–50 cm de largo y 5–15 cm de ancho, ápice acuminado, base cuneada, haz glabra, costa con frecuencia menudamente hirsuta, envés glabro; lígula 5–15 mm de largo. Inflorescencia ampliamente cilíndrica a ovoide, 5–25 (–50) cm de largo y 3–8 (–10) cm de ancho; brácteas ampliamente ovadas, 2.5–5 cm de largo, obtusas, glabras, verdes; bractéolas 20–30 mm de largo; cáliz 6–15 mm de largo; corola 50–75 mm de largo, glabra, blanca a roja; labelo vistoso, 50–70 mm de largo, rojizo anaranjado, lobos laterales rojo-morados con nervadura amarilla, lobo medio maculado con amarillo. Cápsula elipsoide, 10–25 mm de largo.

Poco común en bosques alterados, húmedos, zona atlántica; 10–300 m; fl sep–dic, fr feb; Moreno 12801, Stevens 18749; Guatemala a Bolivia.

    Plants usually quite stout, 1-4 m. tall, essentially glabrous throughout, or the bracts and leaves indefinitely papillate; stems straight or somewhat spiral; leaves narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, acuminate,, broadly cuneate and obscurely sub- auriculate at the base, shortly subpetiolate, 15-40 cm. long, 4-12 cm. broad; inflorescence broadly ovoid to oblong-fusiform, sessile and set closely amongst the upper reduced leaves, 5-25 cm. long; bracts without appendages or only the lowermost somewhat leaf-like, broadly ovate, obtuse, 2.5-3.5 cm. broad, deep yellowish green flushed with crimson within at anthesis, usually with a con- spicuous yellow linear callus; calyx 1 cm. long, broadly 3-dentate; ovary 0.4 cm. long; corolla 4.0-6.5 cm. long, yellowish white, the lobes obovate-oblong; labellum 7-8 cm. long, broadly 3-lobed and sharply reflexed, reddish orange with pale yellow reticulations.

    Plantas (0.5–)2–6 m. Hojas con lámina 15–60 × 5–15 cm; vaina y lámina glabras; lígula 0.5–1.5 cm,truncada. Infl. 5–10 × 3–7 cm (hasta ca. 25 × 9 cm en fr.), ampliamente cilíndrica a ovoide; brácteas verdeso a veces rojas, sin apéndice. Fls. con cáliz 0.6–1.5 cm; corola glabra; labelo 5–7 × 4–5.5 cm, extendido, rojo oscuro con líneas amarillas.

    Distribution

    Guatemala to Peru and northern Brazil, chiefly in lowland thickets and open forest.
