General Information

Plants creeping. Stems and branches scabrous, puberulent, or hispid. Tendrils filiform, puberulent. Petiole 7-12 cm, setose; leaf blade suborbicular or reniform, 6-15 × 6-15 cm, papery, abaxially hispid, adaxially scabrous, undivided or 3-7-lobed, dentate; sinus truncate or rounded. Plants monoecious or flowers bisexual. Male flowers 1 or 2 to several, fasciculate; pedicels filiform, 0.5-4 cm, pubescent; calyx tube narrowly campanulate, 3-8 mm, densely hispidulous to white villous; segments subulate or linear, 2-4 × 0.4-1.2 mm; corolla yellow; tube 1-2 mm; segments ovate-oblong to broadly ovate or obovate, 3-24 × 2.5-20 mm, obtuse; anther cells flexuous. Female flowers solitary; ovary ellipsoid or fusiform, 4-11 × 2-5 mm, densely white lanate, villous or puberulent; style 1-2 mm; stigmas 3, 2-2.5 mm. Fruit very variable in size, shape, color, odor, and taste. Seeds numerous, yellow-white, ovate-oblong, 4-8 × 2.4-4 mm, smooth, base rounded, apex acute, emarginate. Fl. and fr. May-Sep.

      Plantas anuales o perennes. Tallos híspidos a densamente híspidos, verdes, los ápices jóvenes frecuentemente vellosos. Hojas 11.5 × 12.7 cm, ancha a muy anchamente ovadas, enteras o someramente 3-5-lobadas, membranáceas a cartáceas; haz y envés híspidos, largamente estrigosas sobre las nervaduras; base cordata, un seno basal presente; márgenes denticulados; ápice anchamente agudo a obtuso; pecíolos 1.6-12.5 × 1.5-3 mm, híspidos a pelosos. Zarcillos híspidos y/o estrigosos, glabros hacia el ápice. Inflorescencias estaminadas 2-4-floras; pedúnculo 3-4 × 1 mm, densamente largamente híspido a peloso; hipanto 3-7 × 3-4 mm, estrigoso, verde a verde pálido; lobos del cáliz 2-5 × 0.5-1 mm, subulados, las superficies interna y externa estrigosas; corola 10-13 mm de diámetro, los lobos 10-20 × 5 mm, elípticos, amarillos a amarillo pálido, los ápices apiculados a muricados, las superficies interna y externa estrigosas; estambres 3.5-mm. Pedicelo pistilado 3-30 × 1-2 mm, densamente largamente híspido a peloso; cáliz y corola como en las flores estaminadas; ovario 4-15 × 2.5-10 mm, fusionado a la parte inferior del hipanto, oblongo a ovoide, muy densamente seríceo (retrorso o antrorso) o largamente híspido a velloso, los tricomas patentes o adpresos; estilo 1-2 mm; pedúnculos fructificantes 4-5 × 1 mm, estrigoso. Frutos 2.5-5 × 1.5-4 cm, globosos a subglobosos, con o sin bandas, la pulpa clara y carnosa, verde a amarillo a anaranjado, la superficie lisa, glabra a pelosa; semilla 4-5 × 2 × 1.5 mm, blancas a color crema.       Plantas anuales, rastreras, herbáceas; monoicas. Hojas ampliamente ovadas a reniformes, 2.5–16 cm de largo y 2.5–20 cm de ancho, cordadas, sinuado-denticuladas, membranosas, híspidas, no lobadas o con frecuencia cortamente 3–5-palmatilobadas, el lobo central más grande, por lo general ampliamente ovado-triangular, obtuso a redondeado, apiculado; pecíolos 1–15 cm de largo. Flores estaminadas en fascículos axilares de 2–4 flores, pedicelos delgados, 2–25 mm de largo, hipanto 3–6 mm de largo, sépalos 1–6.5 mm de largo, corola campanulada, pétalos 5–22 mm de largo; flores pistiladas pediceladas, pedicelos 3–50 mm de largo, hipanto y perianto como en las flores estaminadas, ovario elipsoide a cilíndrico, liso, densamente cortamente puberulento a densamente velloso, 5–60 mm de largo. Fruto muy variable en tamaño, forma, color y ornamentación, 2.5–15 (–100) cm de largo y 2.5–20 cm de ancho, blanco-verdoso, amarillo o amarillo-café cuando maduro, usualmente fragante, en plantas no cultivadas comúnmente elipsoide, 3–6 cm de largo y 2–4 cm de ancho, con rayas verde obscuras y claras, amarillo cuando maduro, pedúnculo 0.4–4 cm de largo; semillas 4–15 mm de largo, 2–7 mm de ancho y 1–2 mm de grueso.

      Común en bosques caducifolios y pastizales, especialmente en sitios alterados y en los márgenes de ríos y lagos, zona pacífica; 0–940 m; fl y fr may–dic; García 6, Stevens 3601; nativa de los paleotrópicos, ampliamente cultivada por sus frutos y semillas comestibles, a veces naturalizada. Las plantas silvestres de Nicaragua parecen ser en parte naturalizadas de la subespecie cultivada C. melo ssp. melo (Stevens 23509), la cual tiene ovarios vellosos y es originaria del suroeste de Asia, y en parte adventicias de la subespecie ruderal C. melo ssp. agrestis (Naudin) Greb. (Guzmán 545), la cual tiene ovarios densamente puberulentos y es de origen paleotropical; sin embargo no hay barreras reproductivas entre las subespecies, por lo que será normal encontrar plantas intermedias. Staminate flowers axillary, fasciculate; peduncle 0.5-2.0 cm long; calyx subcylindrical, lobes 4-6 cm long, subulate, hirsute, green; corolla campanulate, the lobes ca. 1 cm long, yellow, oblong, the apex acute; stamens 6-8 mm long, the anthers 3-4 mm long, the appendix of connective dilated, bilobate; pistillode glandlike. Pistillate flowers in same axils as the staminate flowers; peduncles 1-2 cm long; calyx and corolla as in the staminate flowers; ovary ovoid to subcylindrical, tomentose, the style 1-2 mm long, the stigma forming a spherical head. Fruit variable in color, usually globose, smooth or reticulate, variable in size, glabrous or pubescent; seeds grayish white, oblong, compound, 7-12 mm long, 4-7 mm wide.

      Annual or perennial herbs or vines, with or without a woody rootstock. Stems branched, hirsute, glabrescent, in the wild forms sometimes short, but in cultivated forms up to 2 m long. Leaves sub-orbicular to reniform, usually angular or faintly 3-7-lobed, cordate at the base, as a rule denticulate, softly hairy to subhirsute on both surfaces, in cultivated forms up to 15 cm long and wide, but in the truly wild forms sometimes considerably smaller; petioles as a rule about as long as or longer than the corresponding blades, subhispid. Female flowers solitary on a robust, up to 2 cm long pedicel; perianth as in the male; ovary various but in the wild forms ellipsoid or faintly turbinate, hairy. Fruit in the wild oblong or ellipsoid to obpyriform or somewhat turbinate, smooth, usually green mottled in bands with lighter greyish green but often ultimately concolorous, light to rather deep yellow, 4-6 cm long and 2-4 cm in diam. with white pulp (in cultivated specimens much larger with various types of skin and colour pattern; smooth or rough, yellowish, greenish, greyish or brownish, etc., and with yellow, orange or green pulp). Seeds in cultivated forms 10-12 mm by 7 mm, in wild forms sometimes considerably smaller.
