Arboles, hasta 25 m de alto. Hojas oblongas a ovadas, 10–30 cm de largo y 5–15 cm de ancho, la base truncada o ligeramente cordada, margen entero, cartáceas, menudamente puberulentas en el envés, palmatinervias, nervios principales divergiendo a 30–50 de la costa; pecíolos 5–15 cm de largo. Inflorescencia densamente verde-amarilla o gris canescente, pedúnculo 5–15 cm de largo, raquis 2–5 cm de largo; flores estaminadas 3-meras, 1–1.5 cm de largo; flores pistiladas 4-meras, 1.5–2 cm de largo. Fruto elipsoide, 2 cm de largo, 6–8-acostillado; cúpula canescente.

Común, bosques perennifolios, zona atlántica; 0–500 m; fl oct–may, fr mar–jul; Stevens 7507, 8701; Chiapas a Panamá. Algunas colecciones de Nicaragua (Ortiz 897 y Sandino 4928) muestran caracteres intermedios con H. didymantha. Esta especie puede ser en verdad un sinónimo de H. guianensis Aubl. Ha sido erróneamente identificada como H. sonora L.

    Trees 7-15 m. tall; branchlets conspicuously angulate, minutely canescent to glabrate; leaves long-petiolate, the blade very broadly ovate, subcaudate-acuminate, broadly cordate, 12-30 cm. long, 6-20 cm. broad, membranaceous, minutely canescent to glabrate beneath, the petioles 7-12 cm. long; inflorescences about half as long as the subtending leaves, bearing several reduced, shortly petiolate leaves above, the ultimate branches terminating in canescent, involucrate cymules bearing 2 staminate and 1 pistillate, sessile or subsessile flowers; staminate flowers about 1 cm. long, densely canescent, the elliptic-oblong outer perianth lobes about equalling the tube, the stamens 3, each subtended by paired sessile staminodia, 4 mm. long, the anthers somewhat longer than the filaments; pistillate flowers about 1.2 cm. long, the perianth lobes about equalling the tube, the cupule about one- third as long as the perianth tube, about 2 mm. long and 4 mm. broad, fleshy, the orifice margin strongly involute. Mature fruit unknown.

    Árbol, 8 – 40 m. Hojas con la lámina 9 – 23 X 4 –18 cm, ovada a ampliamente ovada. Infls. 12 – 23 cm. Fls. estaminadas 3-meras; fls. pistiladas 4-meras. Frs. ± 2 cm de diám. (incluida la cúpula), ligeramente estriados longitudinalmente.
