Cespitosas. Tallos 3-100 cm, erectos a decumbentes, generalmente esparcidamente ramificados; entrenudos glabros; nudos generalmente pilosos. Vainas glabras; lígula 0.8-1 mm; láminas 8-15 cm x 2-3 mm, papiloso-hirsutas en el haz. Inflorescencia 3-8 cm, no conspicuamente plumosa; eje 0.5-2 cm; racimos 1-6, 3-7 cm, subdigitados; entrenudos del raquis y pedicelos moderadamente ciliados con tricomas 1.5-3.5 mm, el surco central más angosto que las costillas. Espiguillas sésiles 3.5-4 mm; gluma inferior 7-nervia, sin una fóvea, pelosa por debajo de la mitad; gluma superior glabra; lema inferior c. 2 mm; arista 14-18 mm. Espiguillas pediceladas 3.5-4 mm, estériles o estaminadas; gluma inferior 9-nervia. Escapada del cultivo, bordes de caminos. Ch (Breedlove y Davidse 54913, MO); Y (Davidse et al. 20574, ISC). 0-1500 mm. (Nativa del Viejo Mundo; cultivada y naturalizada en América tropical y subtropical.)

    Perennial, tussocky from a branching rootstock. Culms slender, erect or geniculately ascending, 25–70 cm tall, 3–6-noded, nodes glabrous or appressed bearded. Leaf sheaths keeled, congested at plant base; leaf blades linear, 5–16 × 0.2–0.3 cm, usually sparingly hairy with tubercle-based hairs, apex acuminate; ligule ca. 1 mm. Inflorescence composed of 5–15 racemes, subdigitate or inserted on a brief axis; racemes 3–7 cm, silvery-green or tinged purplish brown; rachis internodes and pedicels ciliate with long white or pinkish silky hairs. Sessile spikelet 4–5 mm; lower glume oblong-lanceolate, usually cartilaginous, sometimes herbaceous, back flat to slightly concave, 5–7-veined, silky-pilose below middle, lacking a pit, margins keeled and stiffly ciliate near apex; awn of upper lemma 1–1.5 cm. Pedicelled spikelet male or barren, subequal to sessile spikelet, glabrous. Fl. and fr. autumn. 2n = 40, 50, 60.

    Plantas cespitosas, 55–60(–100) cm. Hojas con la vaina glabra; lígula 0.8–1 mm; lámina 6–17 cm × 2–4 mm,glabra a cortamente hirsuta. Infl. de 1–6 racimos, 3–7 cm, subdigitados. Espiguillas sésiles (3.5–)4–4.5(–5) mm;gluma inferior sin una fóvea; lema inferior ca. 2 mm; arista (lema superior) 14–18 mm. Espiguillas pediceladas(3–)4.2–4.5 mm.
