General Information

Perennial with scaly rhizomes. Culms tough, erect, 60–200 cm tall, usually unbranched, nodes glabrous or pubescent. Leaves basal and cauline; leaf sheaths rounded, glabrous; leaf blades linear, flat, 20–40 × 0.3–1.5 cm, glabrous, apex acuminate; ligule 1.5–7 mm, a ciliate fringe, membranous at the base. Panicle open, oblong or rhomboid in outline, 15–55 cm, the spikelets often clustered on the secondary branches. Spikelets ovate, 3–5 mm, glabrous; glumes ovate, acuminate; lower glume 2/3–3/4 length of spikelet, 5-veined; upper glume as long as spikelet, 5-veined; lower floret staminate, lemma similar to upper glume, 5–7-veined, palea well developed; upper floret pale, shiny. Fl. and fr. Jul–Oct. 2n = 21, 25, 30, 32, 36, 72.

    Panicum ichnanthoides Fourn.

    Plantas rizomatosas. Tallos 100-200 cm, erectos, generalmente simples; entrenudos y nudos glabros. Vainas ciliadas, generalmente glabras, a veces pelosas; membrana ligular 0.3-0.8 mm, los cilios 1.5-3.5 mm; láminas 10-60 cm x 3-15 mm, lineares, aplanadas, generalmente glabras y pilosas en el haz en la base, a veces pelosas, ligeramente angostadas en la base. Panículas 15-50 cm, terminales; ramas 6-20 cm, solitarias o pareadas, escabrosas, patentes. Espiguillas 3.4-4 mm, solitarias, adpresas, ovoides, glabras; gluma inferior 1.8-3.2 mm, 2/3-3/ 4 del largo de la espiguilla, amplexicaule, 5-nervia, acuminada; gluma superior tan larga como la espiguilla, 5-7-nervia, acuminada; flósculo inferior estaminado; lema inferior ligeramente más corta que la gluma superior, 5-7-nervia, acuminada; pálea inferior 3/4 a casi tan larga como la lema inferior; anteras 1-2.9 mm; flósculo superior 2.3-2.5 x 0.9-1.1 mm, liso, brillante, glabro, subagudo, sésil; anteras 1.7-1.8 mm. Sabanas, claros graminosos en bosques de Pinus-Quercus. Ch (Davidse y Davidse 9396, MO). 0-1400 m. (S. Canadá a Chiapas, Cuba, Bermuda; introducida en Argentina.)

    Panicum ichnanthoides era considerado (Hitchcock y Chase, 1915) distinto del ampliamente distribuido y variable P. virgatum en sus inflorescencias más angostas y la ausencia de rizomas largos y reptantes. Sin embargo, P. ichnanthoides posee rizomas cortos escamosos similares a los de poblaciones mexicanas y algunas norteamericanas de P. virgatum, y su tipo de inflorescencia puede también ser ocasionalmente visto en P. virgatum.
