A very tall tree with rough fibrous bark to about halfway up trunk, then smooth, white or grey-green bark above, with umbels paired in leaf axils.

    Morphology

    Buds clavate; operculum conical, 2–3 mm long, 3–4 mm wide.

    Umbels paired in leaf axils, 9–15-flowered; peduncle angular, 0.5–1.3 cm long; pedicels 2–4[5] mm long.

    Juvenile leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate, oblique; adult lanceolate, 9–14 cm long, 1.6–2.7 cm wide with nervation very oblique; petiole channelled, 1.2–2.2 cm long.

    Fruits obconical to pyriform, 5–9 mm long, 4–7 mm wide, with broad level or slightly descending disc and 3 flush or slightly exserted valves.

    Tree usually to 75 m, recorded to 100 m. Bark rough up to 15 m on trunk, smooth, white or grey-green above, often shedding in strips. Adult leaves lanceolate or broadly lanceolate; lamina 9-14 cm long, 1.6-2.7 cm wide; petiole channelled, 12-22 mm long. Peduncle angular, 5-13 mm long; pedicels 2-4 mm long. Operculum conical, 2-3 mm long, 3-4 mm wide; hypanthium obconical, c. 3 mm long, 3-4 mm wide. Fruits 5-9 mm long, 4-7 mm wide.

    Habitat

    Grows in tall open forest, often in pure stands.

    Distribution

    Occurs in the mountains of southern Vic, and in the Huon and Derwent River valleys, Tas.
