Trepadoras leñosas, hasta de varios metros de largo, con ramitas glabrescentes. Hojas ovadas, de varios tamaños en la misma rama, mayormente 9–14 cm de largo, ápice agudo, base obtusa o redondeada, a veces rápidamente glabrescentes; pecíolos hasta 1.5 cm de largo, glabrescentes. Inflorescencias panículas laxas con varias flores, axilares o terminales, con hojas normales disminuyendo hacia arriba y volviéndose brácteas pequeñas, raquis glabro, pedicelos ausentes, la última rama de la inflorescencia parecida a un pedicelo, flores nocturnas y fragantes; cáliz tubular-campanulado, 3–4 mm de largo, glabro, lobos deltoides, ca 1 mm de largo; corola verde-amarillenta, a veces purpúrea, tubo delgado, 18–20 mm de largo, apenas ensanchado alrededor de las anteras, glabro por fuera, a veces pubescente por dentro, lobos 7–9 mm de largo, marginalmente tomentulosos; filamentos libres hasta 0.5 mm de su longitud, sin dientes, glabros. Baya elipsoide u obovoide, 6–8 mm de largo, azul, negruzca o blanca; semillas 5 mm de largo.

Poco común, bosques de galería, bosques secos, zona pacífica; hasta 600 m; fl dic–feb, fr feb; Sandino 4097, Stevens 22627; México (Veracruz) a Colombia y Venezuela.

    Scandent shrub, sometimes several m long; twigs slender, glabrous. Leaves to 10 cm long, ovate, apically acute, basally obtuse or rounded, the margins slightly revolute, veins 4-7 on each side, membranaceous, glabrous; petioles sub- sessile to 3.5 cm long; minor leaves sometimes present, rotund to lanceolate. In- florescences several, elongate open panicles, axillary or terminal, the peduncle tc 15 cm long, slender, glabrous, with foliaceous bracts near the base, the pedicels to 2 mm long, stout, the bracteoles linear, to 2 mm long. Flowers with the calyx 3 mm long, tubular-campanulate, green, puberulent in the upper half, strongly costate, the teeth short-deltoid and evenly pubescent within; corolla green, the tube 18-20 mm long, slender, expanding slightly below the apex, outside glabrous, inside pubescent at the base or glabrous, the lobes lanceolate, 7-9 mm long; stamens equal, the filaments free less than 0.5 mm, glabrous, straight, un- appendaged, the style pubescent on the upper 2 mm, the stigma laterally flattened. Fruit (Francey) blue, obovoid, 9 mm long, 8-seeded.

    Distribution

    a scandent vine of the lowlands, occurring from Vene- zuela to Guatemala. In Panama it is apparently rare.
