General Information

Shrub 0.5-2 m tall with scandent branches, the bark brown with fine vertical fissures and small projections formed by the persistent prickle bases. Flowering stems moderately armed with brownish straight or recurved needle-like prickles 2-5 mm long, the base up to 1 mm wide, moderately to densely pubescent with whitish short-stalked stellate-multangulate hairs up to 1 mm in diameter, the rays 5-12, 0.25-0.5 mm long, the midpoints 0.25-0.5 mm long, eglandular, about as long as the rays.
Sympodial units plurifoliate, not geminate.
Leaves simple, the blades 2.5-9 x 1.5-5 cm, ca. 2 times as long as wide, ovate, chartaceous, green adaxially and abaxially, sparsely to moderately pubescent adaxially with sessile to short-stalked white porrect-stellate hairs with 2-8 rays, the midpoints shorter than or equal to the lateral rays, densely white-pubescent abaxially with short- to long-stalked porrect-stellate to multangulate hairs; major veins 4-6 on each side of midvein; base truncate to subcordate, sometimes unequal; margin entire; apex acute; petioles 0.5-1.5 cm long, densely white-pubescent with hairs like those of the stems.
Inflorescences 0.5-3 cm, extra-axillary or leaf-opposed, unbranched, with 1-3 flowers,
the plants weakly to strongly andromonoecious with perfect and staminate flowers, the axes moderately to densely pubescent with hairs like those of the stems, sparsely armed; peduncle 0.5-2 cm; rachis 0.2-1.5 cm; pedicels 20-30 mm in flower, 30-40 mm and pendent in fruit, spaced 2-10 mm apart, articulated at the base.

Flowers 5-merous, heteromorphic with long- (hermaphroditic) and short-styled (staminate) forms and the plants andromonoecious. Calyx 5-6 mm long, the tube ca. 2 mm, the lobes 3-4 x 1-1.5 mm, linear-lanceolate, the apex acuminate, moderately to densely pubescent with hairs like those of the stems, unarmed; fruiting calyx not accrescent. Corolla 2-2.5 cm in diameter, stellate, without interpetalar tissue, white, the tube 1-1.5 mm, the lobes 8-10 x 2-3 mm, narrowly triangular, moderately to densely stellate-pubescent abaxially, glabrous adaxially. Stamens equal, the filament tube absent, the free part of the filaments 1-2 mm long, glabrous; anthers 6-7 x 1-1.5 mm, lanceolate, gradually tapered distally, not connivent, yellow, the pores small and directed distally, not opening into longitudinal slits. Ovary sparsely puberulent with unbranched glandular hairs; style 8-10 x 0.25-0.5 mm in perfect flowers, cylindrical, glabrous; stigma clavate to capitate.
Fruit a berry, 1.5-2 x 1-1.5 cm, ellipsoidal to ovoid, yellow to yellow green, glabrous, the pericarp thin.
Seeds 2.5-3 x 1.5-2 mm, flattened, reniform in outline, yellow, the surface rugulose.

      Solanum gardneri occurs in the dry thorn shrub of Venezuela and caatinga of northeastern and southeastern coastal Brazil in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, and Sergipe at elevations of 0-1000 m.
