General Information

Lindsaea lancea (L.) Bedd. var. lancea, Suppl. Ferns S. Ind. 6. 1876; Adiantum lanceum L. Fig. 75 H, I.Rizoma con escamas lanceoladas, café-rojizas a café oscuras, lustrosas; hojas agrupadas, 20–40 cm de largo; pecíolo ca 1/2 de la longitud de la hoja o un poco más largo, cilíndrico a distalmente cuadran­gular, adaxialmente marginado o cortamente alado, pajizo o café oscuro, mayormente glabro; lámina 1- ó 2-pinnada; pinnas 1 o hasta 7 pares de pinnas latera­les y una pinna terminal, pinnas laterales oblongo-lanceoladas, ascendentes, muy levemente reducidas hacia ambos extremos, las proximales cortamente pecioladas, las distales sésiles, el segmento terminal grande y en forma de lanza; últimos segmentos 2–3 veces tan largos como anchos, lunulados a sub­falcados, mayormente super­puestos entre sí, ar­quea­dos, dimidiados, márgenes acros­cópicos leve­mente crenu­lados; nervios 1–3-bifurcados; indusio 0.3–0.5 mm de ancho, continuo, con margen ente­ro.Bosques húmedos y pluvioselvas; Martínez 2015, Pipoly 3902; 0–600 m; México a Bolivia y Brasil, las Antillas.     Rhizome short- to long-creeping, 1.5-3 mm diam.; rhizome scales lustrous, dark brown, lanceolate, 1-2 mm long, 0.3 mm wide; fronds pinnate or bipinnate, clumped, 10-50 cm long; stipe 1/3-½ the frond length, yellowish to dark brown especially at base, angular; rachis at insertion of basal pinnae sharply angular abaxially; blade pinnate or bipinnate; pinnae 12-35 pairs, pinnae or segments subtrapezoidal, lunulate to subfalcate, glabrous; veins free, 2-forked; sori continuous on segment margin; indusium 0.2-0.5 mm wide, margin entire.

    Rhizome short-creeping, knotted, 2-3 mm in diam., clothed with narrowly lanceolate, longacuminate scales up to 2 mm long and 0.2 mm broad. Fronds close, erect to spreading, mostly 35-80 cm long; stipes shorter than or equalling the blades, dark brown at base, lighter distally (or purple-brown in a groove throughout), rather sharply angular with ffat surfaces or somewhat grooved distally. Blades variable, usually 2-pinnate (or 1-pinnate when juvenile or in var. falcata, the latter not recorded from Puerto Rico), up to 50 cm long, 20-35 cm broad; rhachis quadrangular, deeply grooved on both sides; pinnae mostly 2-4 pairs and a similar terminal one, linear- acuminate, 17-25 cm long, ascending or spreading; pinnules 12-25 pairs, subtrapezoidal, 1.5-2 cm long, 6-11 mm broad, with straight to concave basiscopic margin, the acroscopic margin proximally straight and distally broadly rounded; distal margin crenulate when sterile, entire when fertile; veins evident, mostly 2-forked, Sori submarginal, continuous or nearly so; indusium very nanow, much less than width of opposed margin.

    Morphology

    Stem: stipe circular/brown dark nigrescens/angular/sub terete. Leaf: blade 1 pinnate/2 pinnate; veins 2 or more veins by sori; pinnule sub trapezoid to falcate/dimidiate - ovate. Sporangium: indusiate indusium entire. Spore: spore trilete.

    General Distribution. Greater and Lesser Antilles, Tobago, Trinidad, and continental tropical America from Mexico to Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia.Distribution in Puerto Rico. Known from widely scattered localities, but most frequent in the Siena de Luquillo; recorded from Cidra, Fajardo, Maricao, Rio Grande, and San Juan.Habitat. In shaded heavy clay soils in moist forest at low to middle elevations (20-600 m), locally common.
