General Information

Cochlidium serrulatum (Sw.) L.E. Bishop, Amer. Fern J. 68: 80. 1978; Acrostichum serrulatum Sw.  Fig. 32  C, D.

Rizoma ascendente, con escamas 3–4 mm de largo, café-anaranjadas; hojas dimorfas; pecíolo ca 1.5 cm de largo, oscuro en la base, verdoso distal­mente; láminas lineares, 2–8 cm de largo y 1–2.5 mm de ancho, las fértiles más largas, rectas o falca­das, planas o conduplicadas, profundamente pinnatí­fi­das, subenteras a sinuadas en la porción distal de las hojas fértiles; nervios fácil­mente visibles sólo en las hojas jóvenes estériles; hidátodos inconspicuos; soros solitarios en la base de una vena, confluentes en la madurez hasta formar 1 hilera densa a lo largo del raquis (soro coclidioide) y que ocupa todo el ancho de la lámina fértil y la porción distal de una lámina fértil modificada.

    Rhizome creeping; rhizome scales concolorous orange-brown, ovate-lanceolate, 1-1.3 mm long; fronds distant; stipe ca. 1/8 the frond length, dark brown base (1 -2 mm), the color changing abruptly to green, glabrous; blades dimorphic, sterile blade shorter, deeply pinnatifid, 10-20 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, segments 1-1.5 mm long, fertile blade dimorphic, longer, 35-60 mm long, fertile in terminal half, basal sterile part pinnatifid, 25-35 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, the pinnae ascending, debate, 0.8-1 mm long, glabrous except for very sparse minute pale hairs; fertile part terminal, subentire to undulate, 10-25 mm long, 1.8-2.3 mm wide; sori basal on unbranched veins, appearing nearly costal, glabrous, the lamina folded somewhat.

    Rhizomes ascending; rhizome scales orange-brown, 1–1.3 mm long; stipes to ca. 1.5 cm long, dark brown at very base, green distally, glabrous; blades dimorphic, sterile blades shorter, deeply pinnatifid, 10–20 x 2–3 mm, segments 1–1.5 mm long; fertile blades longer, 35–60 mm long, fertile in distal half, basal sterile part pinnatifid, 25–35 x 1–1.5 mm, the segments ascending, deltate, 0.8–1 mm long, chartaceous, glabrous; veins evident on both sides of blades; hydathodes none or not readily visible; sori basal on unbranched veins, appearing nearly costal but not in deep grooves, the blades somewhat folded (conduplicate); 2n=ca. 105 (Jam, Trin), 140 (Jam).

    Rhizomes 1—2 cm long. Fronds numerous, sessile, linear, 2-5 cm long, the margins dentate; veins simple. Sori linear, slightly wider at apex than at base, confined to apical part of frond. Usually in cloud forests but sometimes in riverine vegetation at lower altitudes.

    Morphology

    Stem: rhizome erect; rhizome scale over 2.0 mm. Leaf: frond hemidimorphic; leaf serrulate; fertile portion of the leaf conduplicate; leaf texture chartaceous; costa not evident; veins simple; hydathode absent ( obscure ); sori not sulcate; sori forming cenosore.
