    Involucre globose or campanulate, glabrous to densely araneose; phyllaries imbricate in many series, ± deflexed in the upper part, coriaceous or scarious, narrowly lanceolate and spine-tipped, margins entire scabrous or ± ciliate (serrate or fimbriate).

    Herbes'annuelles ou vivaces, épineuses.'Feuilles'alternes, souvent décurrentes, à limbe serré ou denté à ± profondément découpé et épineux.'Capitules'homogames, multiflores, globuleux ou campanulés à campanulés-turbinés, sessiles à pédonculés, solitaires ou plus souvent groupés en cymes. Bractées involucrales multisériées, imbriquées, lancéolées à linéaires, aiguës au sommet ou terminées par une épine, entières ou serrulées à fimbriées, glabres ou indumentées. Réceptacle plan ou convexe, densément couvert des soies.'Fleurs'toutes hermaphrodites, tubuleuses; corolle glabre, longuement et étroitement tubulaire, légèrement dilatée et profondément 5-lobée dans la partie supérieure. Anthères linéaires, sagitées ou caudiculées au sommet, avec les appendices lancéolées; filets libres, glabres ou tuberculés à couverts de poils papilleux. Styles linéaires, cylindriques au-dessus, exserts, bifides, à branches courtes, oblongues, obtuses, rarement filiformes.'Akènes ± obovales, striés longitudinalement, glabres; pappus sétacé, plurisérié, à soies inégales, soudées par leur base, scabres.\n\t\t\t\tLectotype: Carduus nutans L.\n\t\t\t\tGenre eurasiatique et africain comptant environ 120 espèces. En Afrique tropicale Kazmi (1963) a reconnu 15 espèces de ce genre, cependant Jeffrey (1968) a réduit ce nombre à 9 espèces. Il faut souligner en plus, que d'après Kazmi, les espèces afrotropicales forment un sous-genre distinct - Carduus L. subgen. afrocarduus Kazmi.\n\t\t\t\tLa flore d'Afrique centrale ne compte que 5 espèces du genre Carduus.
