General Information

"Fls all ligulate and perfect, yellow, blue, or white, the cor- tube generally more than half as long as the ligule; invol cylindric, often broadened at the base in fr, generally imbricate, occasionally merely calyculate; achenes compressed, winged or strongly nerved marginally, with 1 or several lesser nerves in each face, beaked or sometimes beakless, but in any case expanded at the summit where the pappus is attached; pappus of 2 rows of usually equal capillary bristles, none markedly coarser than the others; lactiferous herbs with alternate, entire to pinnatifid lvs and usually numerous heads with relatively few fls (5–56 per head in our spp.), the infl mostly paniculiform.     Herbes'annuelles, bisannuelles ou vivaces, ou sous-arbustes.'Feuilles'alternes ou en rosette basilaire, entières, dentées ou ± découpées.'Inflorescences'paniculées.'Capitules'petits et étroits à médiocres, rarement assez gros; involucre cylindrique à campanulé, à bractées inégales disposées en 2 ou plusieurs cercles; réceptacle dépourvu de paillettes.'Fleurs'à corolle bleue ou jaune, parfois blanche, rose ou violette, à tube glabre ou poilu dans sa partie supérieure; style à branches ± longues, grêles.'Akènes à corps le plus souvent fortement aplati, aux deux faces parcourues chacune par une ou par plusieurs côtes longitudinales, souvent ± brusquement rétréci au sommet en un bec ± long terminé par un disque portant le pappus; pappus formé de soies scabriuscules à lisses, le plus souvent blanches.\n\t\t\t\tGenre groupant environ 150 espèces, surtout de l'Ancien Monde, quelques-unes toutefois d'Amérique du Nord. — Pour la Flore : 22 espèces, dont une représentée par 2 variétés.\n\t\t\t\tL'espèce'L. sativa L., la laitue, est souvent cultivée dans les potagers, principalement au Kivu et dans le Haut-Shaba.
