General Information

Herbs, annual or perennial, 40-200 cm. Stems erect, glabrous, hirsute, or puberulent. Leaves cauline, mostly alternate; petiole 1-7 cm; blade deltate-ovate, lanceolate-ovate, or ovate, 2.5-14 × 1.8-13 cm, abaxially glabrous to hispid, not gland-dotted, base cordate to truncate or broadly cuneate, margin subentire to serrate, apex acute. Capitula 1-3, radiate; peduncles 9-30 cm; involucres hemispheric, 10-22 mm in diam.; phyllaries lanceolate 8-17 × 1-3 mm, abaxially glabrous or hispid, apex acute to long attenuate; paleae 7.5-8 mm, apex 3-toothed. Ray florets 11-23; corollas yellow. Disk florets ca. 30; corollas reddish, sometimes yellow, 4.5-5 mm; style branches reddish or yellow. Achenes 5-12 mm, glabrous or sparsely setuliferous; pappus of 2 lanceolate or linear-lanceolate awns, 1.2-2.5 mm.

    Morphology

    Annual herb, up to 2 m high. Stems, leaves and involucral bracts scabrid-pubescent. Involucral bracts generally 4 mm wide or narrower, usually lanceolate and gradually attenuate. Flowers with yellow rays and purplish disc. Annual herb to c. 2 m, usually branching from the base. Leaves alternate, sometimes opposite below, lamina up to c. 10 x 5 cm, ovate to triangular, apex acuminate, base generally cordate, scabrid-pubescent on both surfaces, petiole up to c. 10 cm long. Heads up to c. 6 cm across the expanded rays, solitary on long peduncles terminating the upper branches. Involucral bracts triseriate, lanceolate, gradually long-acuminate, scabridulous. Rays yellow, disc purplish. Achenes c. 4 mm long, oblong-obovate, somewhat compressed, appressed-pubescent, pappus of 2 small narrow scales, soon caducous.

    Habitat

    Often grown in gardens, sometimes becoming naturalized. A weed in Natal, on sandy waste ground at the head of Durban Bay, and at Mtunzini. Also naturalized in Pretoria. Escaped from cultivation and occurring as weed in waste places. Native to southeastern United States. Liebenberg.
