General Information

Tree; young shoots minutely appressed puberulous, soon glabrous, grey-brown, smooth, without lenticels. Leaves spaced or loosely clustered, opposite, 5-15 × 3.2-6.2 cm, elliptic, apex acute to rounded, base acute, chartaceous, glabrous; venation eucamptodromous, marginal vein present, midrib broad, flat or slightly raised on the upper surface, secondary veins 10-15 pairs, usually sinuous, parallel or divergent, slightly raised on upper surface; intersecondaries absent, tertiaries fine, numerous, oblique; quaternaries finely reticulate. Petiole 0.4-1.5 cm long, broad, not channelled, minutely appressed puberulous or glabrous, stipels absent. Fascicles 2-5-flowered, clustered below the leaves. Pedicel 1-4 mm long, appressed puberulous. Sepals five, 2-2.25 mm long, ovate, apex rounded, appressed puberulous outside, glabrous inside. Corolla ca. 5 mm long, tube ca. 1.5 mm long, lobes five, ca. 3.5 mm long, elliptic, apex obtuse, glabrous. Stamens five, fixed at the base of the corolla lobes; filaments ca. 2 mm long, glabrous; anthers ca. 1 mm long, lanceolate, glabrous. Ovary not seen. Fruit 3-3.5 cm long, ovoid or elliptic, apex rounded (slightly depressed when dry), base rounded, glabrous. Seed solitary; mature seed not seen. Field characters. Tree to 30 m high with large buttresses and greyish-white sweet-tasting bark. Flowers whitish in Jan, fruit recorded Jan, Apr-May and Dec.
