General Information

More or less tufted; rhizome dark purple, short-creeping, knotty, ligneous; roots stout, dark purple. Leaves radical, 50-75 cm long, 6-12 mm wide, 3-costate, gradually narrowed to long acute apex, scabrous on margins, gradually tapering below to reddish-purplish sheath without petiole. Culms scape-like, lateral, to 1/2 as long as leaves, slender, obtusely 3-angled, purplish, minutely scaberulous, clothed at base with several reddish-purple bladeless sheaths 1-7 cm long. Inflorescence a simple umbel, rarely reduced to a single head. Umbels 1 or 2, in the latter case the lower one distant and arising from a long-sheathing bract with a lamina up to 5 cm long; heads (1 -)3 or 4, globose, 6-8 mm across, the central sessile, the others on ascending peduncle 1.5-4 cm long; involucral bracts 2 to 4, short, sheathless. Spikelets capitate, glumes 3, ovate to elliptic, shorter than perigynium, 1 front empty, 2 laterals keeled, minutely puberulent, bearing a partial staminatc spikelet almost as long as the glume. Perigynia ellipsoid, 3-sided, 2.8-4 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, glabrous, herbaceous, distinctly many-nerved, the apex often sparsely hispidulous and contracted to a short beak 0.8-1 mm long, the orifice more or less 2-toothed. Achenes loosely enveloped, broadly obdeltoid-obovate, triquetrous with ridged angles, 1.7 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, blackish at maturity, cuneate at base, rounded at apex; style slightly swollen toward the base; stigmas 3.
