Leaves 1 m or more long; sheaths dark castaneous, toward apex densely serrate and very densely brown-lepidote; petioles narrow and very distinct, laxly armed toward base with dark nearly straight spines to 2 mm long; blades linear-lanceolate, long-attenuate at both ends, 3 cm wide, entire, glabrous. Scape 13 mm in diameter, brown-lepidote; scape-bracts erect, densely imbricate, the lowest subfoliaceous and somewhat petiolate, over 25 cm long, densely serrate below the blade, the highest not at all petiolate. Inflorescence dense, very densely ferruginous-lepidote. Floral bracts imbricate, lanceolate, acuminate, to 55 mm long, exceeding the sepals, entire, membranaceous; pedicels short and stout. Sepals lance-oblong, acuminate, 34 mm long, the lateral ones alate-carinate; petals naked, 8 cm long, orange, densely puberulent outside, the blade oblong, broadly rounded, to 14 mm wide; stamens included, anthers 15 mm long; ovary 3/5 superior; ovules caudate.
