Arbustos terrestres o epifíticos. Hojas alternas, subopuestas, o verticiladas, perennes, pecioladas, plinervias o pinnatinervias, los márgenes enteros. Inflorescencias axilares, racemosas; bráctea floral 1, generalmente pequeña e inconspicua; pedicelos continuos con el cáliz; bractéolas 2, basales. Flores 5-meras, sin aroma, la estivación valvada; cáliz sinsépalo, el tubo 5-alado opuesto a los senos, el limbo suberecto; corola simpétala, subcilíndrica, cilíndrico-urceolada o subglobosa, anchamente 5-alada opuesta a los lobos, delgadamente carnosa; estambres 10, iguales, casi del largo de la corola; filamentos distintos o la base ligeramente connata, iguales, los conectivos sin espolones; anteras iguales, el tejido de desintegración ausente, las tecas lisas, los túbulos 2, distintos, generalmente más largos que las tecas, dehiscentes por hendiduras alargadas; polen sin hilos de viscina; ovario ínfero. Frutos en bayas; semillas numerosas, pequeñas. 12 spp. E. Costa Rica a NE. Perú.

Inflorescence axillary, racemose, with several to many flowers; floral bracts solitary at base of pedicel, to 20 mm long but usually small and inconspicuous; pedicels either naked or more typically bibracteolate, continuous with the flower. Flowers with the hypanthium prismatic, broadening distally and winged opposite the sinuses; calyx limb suberect, the lobes 5, lanceolate triangular; corolla subcylindric, cylindric urceolate or subglobose, broadly 5-winged opposite the lobes, the lobes triangular, subacute; stamens 10, equal, nearly as long as the corolla, the filaments equal, membranous, distinct or basally slightly connate or connate for half their length, the anthers dorsifixed, membranous with smooth thecae, the tubules usually longer than the anther sacs and opening by short to elongate, introrse clefts; ovary inferior, the stigma truncate, the style filiform, about as long as the corolla, basally surrounded by an annular or cupuliform disc. Fruit a berry with numerous small seeds.

Infls. axilares, racemosas; brácteas florales inconspicuas. Fls. con el pedicelo continuo con el cáliz, las bractéolas 2, submediales a mediales; cáliz con el tubo 5-alado, los lóbulos 5, suberectos; corola subcilíndrica a urceolado- cilíndrica o subglobosa, 5-alada, 5-lobulada, los lóbulos ca. 1/3 tan largos como el tubo, fuertemente reflexos y que exponen los estambres en la antesis (en CR); estambres 10, ± iguales con la corola, iguales entre sí, los filamentos separados o levemente connatos basalmente; anteras con las tecas lisas, el conectivo sin espolones; túbulos 2, separados, usualmente más largos que las tecas y ± de la misma anchura, flexibles, dehiscentes por hendiduras introrsas; ovario ínfero.
